Why We Don’t Offer a Mattress Sleep Trial

Why We Don’t Offer a Mattress Sleep Trial

Choosing a mattress is personal — and we understand why sleep trials have become common. At Carter & Lewis, we take a different approach.

We don’t offer a sleep trial because we build each mattress made-to-order, by hand, in Yorkshire. Instead of shipping mass-produced mattresses back and forth, we focus on helping you choose correctly the first time — with honest guidance, clear firmness information, and craftsmanship that’s built to last.

Made-to-order craftsmanship (not mass production)

Every Carter & Lewis mattress is handcrafted by skilled artisans using premium materials and proven techniques. Because your mattress is made specifically for you, a sleep trial model (where products are routinely returned and resold or disposed of) doesn’t align with how we work — or with the quality standards we hold ourselves to.

Returns are rare — because we help you choose the right fit

Most “trial” returns happen because the wrong mattress was chosen for the sleeper.

Our goal is to prevent that. We guide you through:

  • Your sleeping position (side, back, stomach, combination)
  • Comfort preference (gentle cushioning vs firmer support)
  • Body support needs (including back pain or pressure relief)
  • Temperature and materials (cooling, natural fibres, hypoallergenic options)
  • Practical details like bed size, access, and delivery

Because we do this upfront, our return rate stays low — and customers feel confident placing an order.

How we help you choose correctly (so you can buy with confidence)

If you’re unsure which model is right, we’ll help you narrow it down quickly.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Clear firmness guidance on every mattress
  • Simple “Best for / Feel / Firmness” summaries to compare options
  • Straight answers on what each mattress is designed to do (and who it’s not for)
  • Support from our team if you want a second opinion before you buy

If you’d like help choosing, contact us and tell us:

  1. Your height/weight range (approximate is fine)
  2. Your sleeping position
  3. Any aches, pains, or pressure points
  4. Whether you sleep hot or cool
  5. The feel you like (soft, medium, firm)

We’ll recommend the best match — and a close alternative — so you can decide with clarity.

A more responsible approach

Sleep trials can create unnecessary waste in the industry. Our approach is designed to be more considered:

  • Made-to-order manufacturing
  • Fewer returns
  • Less transport back-and-forth
  • A mattress built for years, not months

Still have questions?

We’re here to help you choose with confidence.

If you’re deciding between two mattresses, send us the names and what you’re looking for — we’ll explain the difference.
