If one of you is a restless sleeper and the other a light one, every turn becomes a wake-up. The answer is individually wrapped pocket springs: each responds on its own, so movement on one side barely registers on the other. Our couples' mattresses are hand-built in Yorkshire with 1,000 to 1,500 pocket springs, edge-to-edge support so you both get the full width, and a breathable finish. Two things: motion isolation and space. Pocket springs, unlike old-style open coils that move as one unit, absorb each sleeper's movement independently, so a turn or a late night doesn't wake your partner. Edge-to-edge support means you can both use the full width without rolling into the middle. If you sleep in different positions or run at different temperatures, a medium-firm pocket-sprung model is the fairest compromise.
Choosing between them
Memory Plus Pocket is the best-value motion isolation with pressure relief. Ernest is a balanced all-rounder for two. Gravity Cell and Diamond use 1,500 springs for even less movement; Reeves adds edge-to-edge support; Sleep Adaptive contours to two different sleepers.

We like different firmness levels. What should we do?
Start with medium-firm, which suits the widest range of sleepers, and choose a pocket-sprung model for independent support. Pop into the showroom together to feel the difference before you decide.
Is a double big enough for two?
A double gives each of you 67.5cm, slightly less than a single. If you have the room, a king or super king does more for partner disturbance than any spring unit.
